When our hospital decided that IT was a key component of our strategy, we asked Pete Shelkin to help us establish the newly created role of CIO. Pete helped us by conducting an IT best practices assessment, defining an IT governance structure, drafting our first IT strategic plan, providing management coaching for IT managers, and creating an 18 month improvement plan to address best practice shortcomings. After we hired our full time CIO, we brought Pete back to manage the planning and system selection phases of EDIS, PACS, and Lab specimen bar-coding projects. We were impressed enough with Pete's work that we brought him back for a repeat performance as interim CIO when we eventually experienced turnover in that position.

Mike Philips, CSO, San Juan Regional Medical Center

Pete was engaged as an interim CIO during a system conversion. Pete did an excellent job in quickly bringing the project back on schedule and restoring order to the IT department.

While I was the CIO at the Ohio State University Medical Center, I brought Pete Shelkin in to help us with a large IT organizational transition at OSUMC. Pete helped define an effective leadership structure for the technology and support teams, and served in the newly created role of Chief Technology Officer (formerly this had been a Director level position). He provided coaching and mentoring to the technology managers and helped to implemented solid, ITIL-based processes where there were none before. We were so satisfied with the results that once we hired the long term CTO we asked Pete to help define the role of Chief Information Security Officer for OSUMC, which included having him serve as our interim CISO. Pete also did a great job for us in this capacity, where he published our first Information Security plan. I recommend Pete to anyone that is looking for a solid, thoughtful healthcare IT leader to help with large organizational transformation initiatives.

Herb Smaltz, CEO, Health Care Dataworks (former CIO, OSUMC)

I worked with Pete Shelkin for over two years with a focus on workstation reliability and usability on our cardiac units. He is a good listener, understands the needs of physicians, unflappable, and focused. His efforts greatly improved the ease of use and responsiveness of our clinical computers.
